If you’re searching for a professional headshot photographer in Swindon, you’ve probably noticed there are different styles available – studio, lifestyle, personal brand… it can all feel a bit confusing, what should you be looking for?
The truth is, your headshot should reflect both who you are and what you need it for.
Over the years, I’ve photographed everything from actor studio headshots to relaxed lifestyle headshot images for small business owners, each one serves a very different purpose.
Lifestyle headshots are focused, professional, chest-up portraits designed to show what you look like, and give an feel for your personality, for profiles, etc, while brand photography is a comprehensive, story-driven shoot that showcases who you are, what you do, how you do it and what makes you different from your competitors.
But let’s break it down further.
Studio Headshots (Perfect for actors, corporate professionals & teams)
A studio headshot is taken against a clean, simple background (usually white, or dark) with carefully controlled lighting.
It’s polished, distraction-free and focused on expression.
For instance, for actor headshots a plain background and well-lit image that fits a casting brief is essential. Agents and casting directors aren’t looking for props or personality-led settings – they need clarity, versatility and a strong, natural expression.
Although the name is ‘head’shot, it is not always just about your head! Headshots can often be waist up and even full length images.
Studio headshots are also ideal if you:
-
Need to meet a specific brief (such as acting or corporate requirements)
-
Want consistency across a team
-
Work in a more formal or traditional industry
-
Need clean images for LinkedIn, press features or speaking engagements
-
Prefer a timeless, minimal look
Plain background headshots don’t always need to be taken in a studio (although this is best!) . Whilst most good studio lighting is too big to take to locations, if needed, a more simple lighting set up along with plain backdrops is still possible to capture headshots in a venue, such as your office for staff and team headshots.
Lifestyle / Branded / Environmental Headshots (more relaxed & story-led)
A lifestyle headshot (also often referred to as environmental or branded headshot) is taken in a real environment – your workspace, outdoors, or a setting that reflects your brand, and may even included branded items.
The lighting is still professional, but the feel is more natural and relaxed.
Lifestyle headshots are becoming more and more popular as potential clients or employers are looking for people who they want to work alongside, or may fit well within their team – and this is seen more easily in lifestyle images.
Lifestyle headshots are particularly popular for:
-
Coaches
-
Creatives
-
Therapists
-
Service-based business owners
-
Personal brands
What’s the difference between Lifestyle Headshots and Brand Photography?
This is where things often overlap.
Lifestyle headshots can sit beautifully within a personal brand photography session, or used to top up or refresh existing brand images – but brand photography usually goes a step further.
A typical headshot is a focused, portrait image of you looking at the camera, for profiles, for example – whereas brand photography is a comprehensive, story-driven shoot that showcases who you are and what you do. Brand shoots will capture both portrait and landscape options, along with a mix of portraits, environmental shots, and candid moments.
While a lifestyle headshot might show you in a working environment (sitting at your desk, for example), a brand session tends to capture a collection of consistent imagery that tells your story, images that viewers will recognise and relate to your brand (even if you’re not in the photo!). This may include images of:
-
Props
- You in action
-
Tools of your trade
-
Wider storytelling images
-
Detail shots
-
Behind-the-scenes moments
-
You working with a client
-
Your notebooks, laptop or products
-
Images for websites and marketing
Think of it this way:
Studio headshot = clean, focused, meets a brief (usually 1-3 images)
Lifestyle headshot = relaxed, personality-led (usually 1-5 images)
Brand photography = visual story of your business (usually a bank of images)
They can overlap – but they’re not the same.
As there are usually a lot more images and variety in Brand photography, it can also incorporate working with other professionals to enhance the images, such as Colour & Body Shape Analysts/Personal Stylists or Hair & Make Up Artists.
Some examples of these types of professionals, who I work alongside in Swindon, can be seen on my website or here:
Jackie Mitchell – Colour Analysis & Personal Stylist from House of Colour
Inspired Styling – Colour / Body Shape Analysis & Personal Styling – online/in-person
Tracey Curnock – Professional Hair & Make-up
Which one is right for you?
It depends on:
-
Where the images will be used
-
How formal your industry is
-
Whether you need to meet a specific requirement
-
How much storytelling you want
Some clients need a straightforward, well-lit headshot for a casting profile or corporate bio.
Others want images that make their website feel warm, welcoming and human.
And sometimes, a combination works beautifully.

Why professional headshots matter for your website & marketing
Professional headshots help with:
-
Website SEO – Google prefers high quality/resolution, unique images over stock photos used across thousands of websites, or low quality imagery
-
Engagement – people are far more likely to click on and interact with posts that feature real faces
-
Personal branding – recognisable images help people connect your name to your face
-
Algorithm visibility – platforms tend to prioritise content that keeps people engaged
Your headshot isn’t about vanity.
It’s about:
-
Building trust instantly
-
Helping visitors understand what you do and form a connection with you
-
Showing professionalism
-
Creating consistency across your website and social media
-
Making your business feel real
You never get a second chance to make a first impression.
Before someone reads your credentials or services, they’ve already formed an opinion based on your image. So, a professional headshot on your homepage or About page can be the difference between someone staying to read more or clicking away.
